Fun is so back in movie theaters, and Paramount Pictures’ newest action-comedy Novocaine is living proof of that!

Directed by the duo of Dan Berk and Robert Olsen, with a screenplay from Lars Jacobson, Novocaine tells the story of Nathan Caine (The Boys’ Jack Quaid), a banker from San Diego who lives a cautious, fairly boring, life thanks to a rare medical condition that renders him unable to feel any type of physical pain.

Too hesitant to do anything exciting in his life because of his condition, Nathan (who his bullies dubbed “Novocaine” back in his childhood) is content to spending most of his time video-gaming with his online best friend Roscoe (Spider-Man and Reginald the Vampire’s Jacob Batalon) and not rocking the boat.

But one holiday season, Nathan’s life is turned upside down after the bank he works at is robbed at gunpoint and his co-worker/love of his life Sherry (Rez Ball and Prey’s Amber Midthunder) is taken hostage. Nathan then decides to put his painlessness to good use and to become the hero in his own story for once, resulting in one of the more original, twist-filled, and (most importantly) fun action-comedies we’ve seen on the big screen in a while.

Batalon and Midthunder, who are providing much needed AAPI-representation in the film (in addition to their comedy chops!), talked to Gold Envelope about working with Quaid, their characters, what the vibe was like on set, and more!

“Jack and I are both really into video games, so it wasn’t that hard to really imagine what it’s like to talk to someone online gaming style,” Batalon told Gold Envelope when asked about his character Roscoe’s uniquely dynamic with Nathan, since in the first half of the film, the two hadn’t met IRL despite being each other’s best friend. “Jack is great, Dan and Bobby are really great at telling a story, so I think of it was just really great writing and just making sure that we were able to tell their story in a great, positive way.”

“The more time you spend with her, the more interesting she gets and the more there is to learn about her,” Midthunder told Gold Envelope about playing Sherry, a character who, as viewers will find out, has her own set of motivations that make for a interesting twist in the second half of the film. “You meet her as one thing, and she becomes so much more, and that to me is what makes her special.”
